You know stroke, right? Yeah! We all do. A situation that old people should be worried about. You know, losing your tooth, climbing the stairs very slowly, developing creaky joints and all those.
Guess what? A lot has changed. Your ability to type so fast on messenger and run quickly across the stairs doesn’t mean that you are not susceptible to this heart and blood vessel condition that’s so common.
Let’s discuss reality: strokes are increasingly ravishing young women too. Yeah! You heard that right. Stroke has become common among young age women. The deadly health condition has been rated as the third killer condition in the U.S. (doubling the rate for breast cancer-related deaths in women). Statistics point to the fact that 35 per cent of these stroke cases happen to women below 65.
Well, women are more susceptible to be affected by stroke, thanks to hormones. Nicole Weinberg, M.D., a California based cardiologist is of the opinion that “Higher hormone levels will compromise the integrity of blood vessels.” She has further stated that “they affect how the vessels stretch and contract, making them more vulnerable to arterial dissection and blood clots.”
Whatever the case may be, all levels of stroke require immediate medical attention. Stroke is an emergency. It is most ideal getting to a medical expert within three hours of first noticing it. Your time of getting an expert look into your case determines your possibility of survival.
The major problem, however, is that many women don’t know any symptoms of strokes, and as such do not have the slightest idea when they should see a doctor. Even more complicated is the fact that early stroke symptoms may differ in younger women.
Below we’ve identified some of the symptoms of strokes common in almost all cases.
General Stroke Symptoms
Noticing that your face doesn’t just look it.
Often times, you may just get this numb feeling in your face. Like noticing a level of unresponsiveness on some part of your mouth when you smile. This is the earliest symptom that most stroke patients experience, according to the CDC. It is common for people to ignore this sign, but you shouldn’t, especially if it comes combined with other symptoms on this list.
You Are Often Too Weak
The next symptom to come will most likely be a feeling of weakness on the arm. The arm will suddenly get too weak and begin to lose coordination. This can either occur as a general body problem or on just one part of your body. Again, you shouldn’t ignore this symptom. Quick medical attention will save a lot.
You Are Finding It Difficult To Speak
This is often the most visible sign that you are being attacked by the stroke. It is like getting close to the peak of it all. Stuttering, becoming inaudible, or completely losing the ability to speak are all symptoms that require immediate medical attention, especially if they come with any of the earlier mentioned symptoms.
Common Stroke Symptoms In Women
All the earlier mentioned symptoms can happen to anybody, but there are some other symptoms that are particular to women. National Stroke Association mentions some of the symptoms as:
Passing Out Cold
Fainting is a popular condition that can be caused by a lot of things, including; pregnancy, fear, pain, low blood pressure etc. In cases of stroke attacks, the blood is blocked from flowing to the brain effectively, and anytime blood flow is tampered with, it may lead to fainting according to Weinburg.
You suddenly get confused about your environment and what’s happening
Anytime you experience a sudden change in your personality or mental state, and you’re sure it is not caused by any external factor, then you should really see a doctor. You should know that excessive drinking or drug abuse causes a bigger risk of stroke. So, if you’re into drugs or alcohol, and experience sudden changes at any time, then you should head to your doctor’s office.
You get dizzy and nauseous without any serious cause
This is one of the symptoms of stroke in women that is easily written off and ascribed to other cases like flu or poisoning, but in truth, you should be concerned and seek medical attention.
You experience a seizure
Strokes are very dangerous, they can quickly cause brain damage. Seizures are one of the most pertinent symptoms of brain damage. If you ever experience a sudden seizure, you should rush to the hospital. According to Weinburg. Apart from stroke, it could yet be other severe health issues that need urgent medical care.
You have a very serious case of headache
If you ever have a headache that is more painful than the usual cases, then you should see your doctor as a matter of emergency.
The continuous case of hiccups
Hiccups are normal, funny sometimes – as long as it stays within 30 seconds. It gets pretty annoying when it begins to delay. But if it continues over a very long time, then you can’t rule out the possibility of a stroke. This may be weird, but a research published in the Journal of Neurology and Neurophysiology pointed towards it. Please, contact your doctor.
